Word unscrambler

Find general English words from supplied letters and single-letter wildcards.

Tool controls

Use ? as a single wildcard. Repeated letters may be used only when supplied.

This uses a general public-domain English word list. Inclusion does not guarantee acceptance by any board game, tournament or official dictionary. ChoiceDrop is not affiliated with any word-game publisher.

Result

Ready when you are

Local only
Set your options, then use the main action.

The larger word list loads only when you search.

How to use it

Find words without using letters you do not have

  1. Enter the available letters, repeating a letter when it may be used more than once, and add ? for each single-letter wildcard.
  2. Set minimum length or begins-with, contains and ends-with filters to narrow a large result set.
  3. Search, review the eligible words by length and show more only when the first results are not enough.

Worked example

What a result means

Letters care can form acre, care and race because each uses only the supplied counts. Adding ? permits one missing letter, but two missing letters would require two wildcards.

Assumptions

Check the eligible input

Results come from a general historical public-domain English list. A matching word is not a guarantee of acceptance in any named game, classroom or tournament.

Selection method

How this tool chooses

A Web Worker compares letter multiplicities and wildcard requirements against the local list. Pattern and length filters run before the bounded visible result set is returned.

Inputs and optional saved data remain in this browser until you remove them.

Practical uses

When it can help

  • Explore anagrams for a word puzzle
  • Find longer words from a letter set
  • Check how a wildcard expands possibilities

Limitations

Use it for the right job

Inclusion does not guarantee acceptance by any board game, tournament or official dictionary. ChoiceDrop is not affiliated with a word-game publisher.

ChoiceDrop does not claim “true random” results, certification or independent auditing.

Frequently asked questions

Good to know

Does a repeated letter need to be supplied twice?

Yes. Letter counts are respected; each ? can replace one missing letter.

Why might a game reject a result?

This tool uses a general public-domain English list, not a publisher’s current official game list.

Will a large search freeze the page?

Filtering runs in a Web Worker and visible results are limited until you choose Show more.
